Personal Space is a collaborative project founded in 2015 when the artists Gabriella Novak and Mariusz Andrzejczyk meet at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. The group performed together until 2019.

The name “Personal Space” comes from their interest in “anthropological studies of space and place”. Edward Hall’s theory describes four different distances between people that can be compared to an air bubble surrounding our body. Like animals, their territory is defined by population, so the size of the human sphere is determined by population, but also depending on the social setting and their cultural backgrounds.

By using body movements, interacting with the audience and using different objects, Personal Space investigates how different societies create space and environment in relation to gender, social status, sexuality or cultural differences.
